According to the RSA’s 2025 Medical Fitness to Drive guidelines, anyone diagnosed with dementia is required to notify both the NDLS and their motor insurance provider.

Individuals holding a Group 2 licence (bus or truck) are not permitted to drive following a diagnosis. Those with a Group 1 licence (car or motorcycle) may be able to continue driving during the early stages of the condition, subject to appropriate medical review and functional assessment.

Driver Assessments Ireland carries out independent driving evaluations designed to assess key abilities such as memory, concentration, awareness, and reaction times in practical driving situations.
